Joyce Ann Smith, beloved daughter of Phillip and Patricia Layne and Lillie Smith Slaughter, was born August 11, 1962 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She departed this life on January 5th, 2022 at Bethesda North Hospital.

Joyce graduated from Purcell Marian high school with friend Cherlyn Bowman.

Joyce married Scott Montgomery. In this union they did not have children. Joyce loved and helped raise her nieces and nephews Shana, Rashandra, Bianca, Cody, Eric, Emmanuel, De’Asia, Jordan and PJ.

Joyce had an infectious personality. She loved giving advice. Joyce went into the Army. That wasn’t for her. She worked at UDF starting as a
cashier, ending in their IT department for many years. Joyce was working at UPS part time at the time of her passing.

Joyce was a Michigan Fan. She loved karaoke with Vincent, she couldn’t sing but would sing with passion. Joyce enjoyed spending time with her
friends Stacie, Pat, Jamie, Kendra and long time friend Cherlyn. Joyce and Larry would hang out at Danny’s.

Joyce made holiday’s and special events fun, warm and eventful. She was always full of positivity, energy and a laugh. Oh that laugh. Going to Baltimore, the movies, dinner and being with friends and family are some of the things she enjoyed. Oh, and football and beer.

Joyce believed in doing what she felt was right, being there for everyone and filling our hearts with love. Her wonderful personality will never be
forgotten. She will always be remembered in the hearts of us all.

Joyce leaves to cherish her memory her sisters Tina Marie Hill, Stephanie Miller, Leticia Smith. Brothers Ricky (Connie) Layne, Larry Layne, Danny Mills, Lovell Smith, Shawn Slaughter and a host of cousins, niece’s and nephews.
