Obituary
Robert Parry Maier was born on April 13,1926 to Ferdinand and Elizabeth (Parry) Maier. Bob grew up in Kennedy
Heights, a neighborhood of Cincinnati, Ohio, along with his siblings Marcia and Elaine. After graduating from
Withrow High School in 1944, Bob enlisted in the Navy, where he served in the Pacific Theater of WWII. Following
his honorable discharge in 1946, Bob trained and hitchhiked from San Franciso back home.
Bob later met Mary Lee Pinel at a Fourth of July picnic at Kenwood Country Club and the two married on June 14,
1950. The couple had four children--Amy, Tom, John and Mindy—over the next nine years and settled in the
Cincinnati suburb of Madeira. Bob played an active role in each of his children’s lives. Notably, he served as troop
leader of the local Boy Scout Troop 209 from 1965-71 as well as acting as the official starter at dozens of swim
meets. He shared his camping skills and love of the outdoors with his family on many vacations.
Bob served as branch manager for the Cincinnati office of Buckeye Insurance Company for 30 years. He later
went to work for Guckenberger Insurance where he finished out his career. It’s been said that many of his clients
stayed with him because of his honesty and integrity.
Bob and Mary Lee were married for almost 64 years until Mary Lee died suddenly in 2014. Throughout the years,
Bob and Mary Lee were involved in many social and community activities. They played bridge monthly with long-
time friends, played golf and tennis and worked with Meals on Wheels. Bob took up running in his 45 th year and
kept at it into his 70s. It was hard to find a time when he was not busy with something. Each year Bob and Mary
Lee would take their children on one or two-week vacations to visit relatives in Florida or Michigan. After
retirement, the couple enjoyed trips across the country and hiking in Europe. Bob even orchestrated a trip with the
entire family (22 in all) to Hawaii to surprise Mary Lee for her 80 th birthday!
Kennedy Heights Presbyterian Church (now Sunrise Presbyterian Church) was a constant in Bob’s life. Bob later
served as a Deacon and Elder and played in the bell choir for many years. Mary Lee and Bob joined the
PresbyPairs early in their marriage and made many wonderful friendships that lasted their entire lives.
In 2017, Bob moved from his home in Madera to The Seasons Retirement Community where he found many new
friends. One very special friend was Charlotte Shultz. His favorite activities included: attending plays and concerts,
history lectures, playing volleyball every week and twice weekly happy hour…”I’ll take an Old Fashioned, Makers
Mark. No sugar. Oh, and make it a double.”
Bob passed away on July 12, 2025, surrounded by his children. Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lee
(Pinel) Maier; sisters, Marcia (Wilson) Talbot; Elaine (Theodore) Graham; and his parents, Ferdinand and
Elizabeth (Parry) Maier. Tom (Connie) Maier, his eldest son, preceded him in death in 2023. He is survived by his
daughter Amy (Brad) Smith, son John Maier, and daughter Mindy (Mike) Cunningham, his grandchildren Danielle,
Steve, Kelsey, Alex, Allison, Amy, Luke, Zach, Maddie and Eliza, and great grandchildren Annabelle, Charlotte, AJ,
Cooper, Jonathan and Theo, each of whom will miss their beloved Punky (a name coined by Danielle as a
toddler).
A memorial service will be held on August 4th at J.C. Battle and Sons; visitation at 10:00, with the service at 10:30
followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bob’s name to Sunrise Presbyterian Church,
