Memorial on Saturday, March 23, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Corinthian Baptist Church . Special online condolences for family and friends may be expressed at https://www.jcbattleandsons.com

Toski Yvonne Bolte Brundage was born March 3, 1956, the only daughter of Hubert Bolte, Jr. and Gypsy Fitzpatrick Bolte. Did you ever wonder about the origin of Tosi’s unique name? Her parents had heard of the Italian opera TOSCA, but opted to use the more unique spelling.

She and her older brother, Hubert Bolte, Jr. (affectionately known as Bud) grew up on Eldridge Avenue on the East Side of Columbus, Ohio at a time when neighborhoods helped to shape lives. Her family’s reach stretched even farther, as their Mother was affectionately known as Mom Bolte to the families whose children she nurtured as a home-based caregiver. Toski was affectionately known as “Toy,” or as “Jon,” the pet name given her by her Father.

Toski attended Pilgrim Elementary School, Champion Junior High School, and East High School, all cultural icons in an era of Black pride and academic excellence. She and her family were members of the historic St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church.

The Ohio State University was her college of choice from which she earned a degree in Dental Hygiene. She was part of the Elegant Eighteen line of women initiated into the Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in 1976. Alpha Kappa Alpha turned out to be the defining decision that netted Toski and the Sorors she touched, a lifelong sisterhood, numerous close friendships, and an eternal kinship with likeminded women of God.

Toski moved to Cincinnati and began her career as a Dental Hygenist. She was associated with the dental practice of Dr. Mark Fleming in 1989 for five years. The practice of Dr. Alec Tackett was her next career move that evolved into a 20-year position where she endeared herself to her patients and especially to her Work Family as only Toski could. Toski’s patients still check on her to this day.

Charles & Toski were introduced by a mutual friend, however, they didn’t realize that they both had attended York Street Methodist Church on the same Sunday. Toski noticed Charles, but Charles didn’t recognize her until the actual introduction at another venue. York Street was his childhood church so he was focused on worship under the leadership of Bishop Todd O’Neal.

Charles obtained her phone number, but was traveling for Chrysler and didn’t call her for two weeks! Toski’s personal life was about to take a dramatic turn when Charles Brundage found his wife and they pursued one other.
“He who finds a [true and faithful] wife finds a good thing And obtains favor and approval from the LORD.” Proverbs 18:22 Amplified Bible

Their introduction was God ordained so Charles & Toski decided to marry in a destination wedding in St. Thomas on October 27, 1991. Since the Brundages wanted to start worshipping together, they decided to choose a mutual church so they were led to Corinthian Baptist. They quickly decided to start a family, and began the process naturally. After many painstaking attempts, Toski & Charles were led to apply to Catholic Social Services to grow their family. They were blessed with their first child, Phoenix in 2003 and were subsequently chosen to parent siblings: Jordan, Naomi, Noelle & Aliyah. What a blessed Family it has become!

In the meantime, Toski continued her career as a Dental Hygenist while raising her girls. Her work ethic was unmatched. After 20 years of service and several months of testing, she was diagnosed with a mild case of Parkinson’s Disease in 2014. Even though she was no longer able to do what she loved, she became more determined than ever to manage her diagnosis by diligently exercising every day and attending a boxing class once a week.

Toski exemplified the Proverbs 31 Woman: a strong woman who put God’s wisdom into practice in her life. “The Heart of her husband, Charles, safely trusted in her.” (verse 11) “Her Children: Phoenix, Jordan, Naomi, Noelle & Aliyah, arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her.” (verse 28) Toski also blessed the people around her through her daily action: her Church Family; her Work Family; her Sorority Family; her North Avondale Montessori School Family; her Walnut Hills Family; her Purcell Marian Family; her Clark Montessori Family; and the fond relationships go on and on.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her husband and children; her Brother, Hubert (Bud) Bolte; Sister in Love, B; her dear Niece, Jenna Bolte; the various famines mentioned above; and many fond friends. Let us all continue to live our lives for the Lord as Toski did!
